Creativity More Elusive Than Ever

With all the distractions of modern life, creativity seems more elusive
than ever. Is there a way to nurture creativity? Can you increase your
creativity through a set of exercises or techniques? How do you prepare
the human brain to be creative?

An Ancient View of Creativity

In the old days the common conception of creativity was that it came on
in some kind of onslaught, if the gods favored you. The Greeks appealed
to the gods called the Muses. There were actually nine of them. If you
wanted to write love poetry, you would appeal to Erato, epic poetry to
Calliope, or write songs and elegiac poetry to Euterpe.

The Greeks understood that creativity came from some source far away
from the normal state of the human brain. The Muse was a metaphor for
creativity, and there were different kinds of creativity. Creativity
flowed from a higher source than what the normal man possessed within
himself. Poets appealed to the Muse to receive this source.

Creativity seems to be a state of higher consciousness as opposed to
the conscious, the subconscious or the unconscious. Creativity appears
to spring from a source that we might call the superconscious or
supermind.

Unlike elements of the subconscious which seem to be on autodrive (like
your heart beating or digesting your food), the superconscious seems
harder to tap into. If we are evolutionary beings, then the
superconscious mind is developing in the human brain. As such,
creativity can be a hit or miss proposition.

9 Ways to Foster Creativity

1.Tap Into the Creative Power of Sleep

When going to sleep, think about your poem, your painting, your
problem. As you feel yourself drifting off try to hold that state while
thinking about your work. Hold them in a relaxed way. Catch the ideas
if they start coming. Have a pen and paper ready and turn on your lamp
to record them. See if you can go back and drift into that state again.
Exhaust this. Warning: Your brain may get so fired up, it can't sleep.
But it will be worth it if you get some good ideas.

2. Immersion in Creative Work

Put work in the specific area you want to be creative in. Creativity
doesn't exist in isolation. Picking writing is too broad. Pick a genre
like poetry or movie scripts. Dance? What kind of dance? Spending time
with the masters in your area lays the groundwork in your field. See
what the masters did; see what your contemporaries are doing.
Eventually, you will put your own individual stamp in your area.
Everyone is the same in some way, but everyone is different in other
ways. Your creativity will be about that difference, your
individuality.

3. Playing with Patterns

As you gain knowledge and work within your area, notice patterns that
make sense to you. What you are doing is controlling knowledge and
skills that develop as you move along. You are striving for small
eureka moments or that one big Eureka moment. What traditional forms or
patterns did you notice? Why are these used? Can you alter them in a
way that will bring something new to the table?

4. Deepening Knowledge

After you think you have a good feel for the standard knowledge in your
field, let your brain freewheel on material that seems to interest you
or stands out for some reason. Relax and let it flow. What do these
patterns mean to you? Can you think of different patterns? Using the
thinking tool called "What if ___."

5. Single Mindedness at the Right Time

Lock on. When your brain seems to follow a certain strain, lock on, and
ride it to its end.

6. Clutter is Precursor to Creativity

Fight through the clutter. Don't get discourage if you seem to be
getting a lot of clutter. This is normal. Make sure you give yourself
enough time to complete the creative process. For some reason the mind
needs warming up. There is a truism in writing that your first
paragraph or even your first page should be cut. There is just a
certain amount of warming up that the creative brain needs. Realize
this as part of the process and not a waste of time.

7. Creativity Needs Incubation

Incubation time. Just as your body needs sleep, your creative brain
needs slack time. You must let your superconsciousness work behind the
scenes.

8. Time Grows Creativity

Remember that time means growth. Stay with your efforts over the days,
weeks, months, years. Eventually, you will reach into the 1,000s of
hours working in your art whatever it may be. You will stoke the fires
of creativity and make the human brain your supermind.

9. Silence is Creative Golden

Give your brain a creative boost by scheduling silence in your life. We
leave in a noisy society where sounds can be relentless. Get your brain
rhythms back to normal. Sit in silence, bask in it, enjoy it.

Take some simple poetry forms like the haiku and the cinquain and spend
an afternoon or few hours learning their forms and tapping your
unconscious to create some neat poetry. By playing with words and using
these poetic forms is the easy way to give your verbal linguistic
intelligence an instant boost. You will also increase your brain power.

Easy Poetry Forms to Raise Your Verbal Linguistic Intelligence

Here are two easy forms you can use to raise your verbal linguistic
intelligence and hve some fun writing poetry.

The Haiku

The haiku is an centuries old Japanese poetic form. It is the easiest
of the poetic forms to master. The haiku is a 3 line 17 syllable poem.
The first line 5 syllables, the second line is 7 syllables, and the
third line is 5 syllables.

Usually the haiku attempts to capture a pastoral or nature scene. It is
like a snapshot of a beautiful scene in nature. The first 2 lines
capture this snapshot. The third line is some form of conclusion like a
emotion or observation.

Here is a haiku by the Japanese master Basho:

Temple bells die out.
The fragrant blossoms remain.
A perfect evening!

To try it out visit a favorite nature spot or you can even use your
front or back yard. See something that strikes you. In your mind, take
a snapshot. Have a writing notebook handy. Start writing down an image
of the scene. See if you can get the image into 5 syllables. For the
second line extend the image or some other image and use 7 syllables.
In the third line draw some conclusion or capture an emotion in 5
syllables. That's it. It's easy and fun.

You can see how easy these are to write. Start writing these and build
up several dozen of these. Use concrete images to capture something in
nature or a sound in nature. Draw some kind of conclusion or emotion
about the scene. This is a fun way to raise your verbal linguistic
intelligence. As you write these your brain cells will adapt to become
language specific.

The Cinquain

The cinquain is a little more complex. It is slightly more challenging.
The modern American form consists of a 5 line poem with syllables of 2,
4, 6, 8, and 2.

A master of this form was Adalaide Crapsey:

Listen...
With faint dry sound,
Like steps of passing ghosts,
The leaves, frost-crisp'd, break from the trees
And fall.

You can add complexity by using iambs (a poetic foot where the first
syllable is unstressed and the next syllable is stressed). The first
line would have one iamb, the second two, the third line three, the
fourth line four and the last line one iamb. In the above cinquain the
third line "Like steps of passing ghosts," is an example of three
iambs.

These forms are quick and easy and they are also excellent for students
in late elementary and middle school. Students that like these and show
talent should be guided toward more complex forms in writing.

If you seem to have a knack for these you might want to try some more
challenging forms. Remember that forms are just patterns. They make
writing poetry easier. As you master more complex forms, your verbal
linguistic intelligence and your brain power will soar. We will

Your Tool Box of Brain Tools: Patterns

Using the right brain tools increases your brain power. One of the best
brain tools to learn is the recognition of patterns. It also helps
build your brain.

Knowing hundreds of facts and figures about any knowledge core be it
literature, math, music, history, or psychology may help you pass a
test, but what it won't do is bring true insight into that knowledge.
For that you need brain tools.

Recognizing patterns brings control to your thinking. It is one of the
best brain tools because it helps create brain cells in the area of the
brain that controls that type of intelligence. Using one of your
intelligences like linguistic or mathematical/logical, discover the
patterns in your knowledge core.

Patterns may be called different names like forms or structure.
Patterns can be called rules or theorems. Science is about patterns,
mathematics is about patterns, literature is about patterns.

Using Patterns as a Brain Tool

When you look at literature and more specifically poetry, look for
patterns. Further, if you understand why certain patterns are used as
opposed to other possible patterns you increase your understanding even
more. Patterns is one of the best brain tools to use when trying to
analyze poetry.

One pattern in poetry is structure. Take a simple poem. A poet may
divide it into two parts to show a shift in thinking. If you realize
that the structure is in two parts, it makes you more aware that there
may be a shift in thinking from one part to the next.

Take one of Walt Whitman's great poems:

When I heard the learn'd astronomer;
When the proofs, the figures, were ranged in columns before me;
When I was shown the charts and the diagrams, to add, divide, and
measure them;
When I, sitting, heard the astronomer, where he lectured with much
applause in the lecture-room,
How soon, unaccountable, I became tired and sick;
Till rising and gliding out, I wander'd off by myself,
In the mystical moist night-air, and from time to time,
Look'd up in perfect silence at the stars.

Did you recognize where the thinking in the poem shifts?

Notice this is an eight-line poem. The first four lines start with
"When." Using "When" to start each clause is called parallel structure
which, of course, is a pattern. The first four lines become longer with
each line stacking information upon information until you can feel the
heavy weight of it all. It is a pattern moving from short to long. He
is stacking, stacking, stacking information until it feels heavy, even
oppressive.

Then the big shift comes starting with "How soon." The first is the
cataloguing of all facts. The second part, the next four lines, signals
a shift in thinking-to how the poet feels. Notice the shortening of the
lines. To him, all the scientific facts and figures make him a little
sick. Then he goes outside, looks upon the beauty of the stars and the
mystery of the heavens and feels at peace in that beauty once again.

Knowing the poem has the pattern of a two-part structure helps the
reader understand the poem. It is similar to a problem/solution
structure. In the first part, the poet's problem is that all the
science makes him a little sick to his stomach. It overwhelms him and
destroys the natural beauty and mystery of the heavens. The solution is
to go out and experience the beauty and mystery of the stars and
heavens.

The knowledge domain of poetry has many other patterns like sound and
rhythm patterns. Knowing these and being able to use your linguistic
intelligence to understand their value and why the poet uses them puts
you into a small elite group that really understands poetry. And it all
starts with patterns.

When trying to master a knowledge core like writing, poetry, math,
science, business, look for the patterns. They will increase your
understanding and raise your intelligence.

It's only a matter of using one of the best brain tools, patterns, to
understand anything and build your brain at the same time.

The Brain and Learning: Focus

In today's busy and social world, it's easy to think you are focusing.
Learning complex skills and memorizing important knowledge takes
concentration.

If you are listening to music, watching football, or drowning is social
media, you will find it hard to learn efficiently. You think you've
learned something, yet later something important escapes you. Be honest
with yourself. You must set aside "quiet time" in order to focus on
knowledge and skills you need to master. Remember to focus to
accelerate the brain and learning.

The Brain and Learning: Time on Task

There is a truism that all teachers know. That to learn you must spend
"time on task." You must do a skill or study a body of knowledge until
you master it.

If you don't spend enough time, at a later date you will be asking
yourself why you can't recall important information or perform a needed
skill. Use time on task strengthen the brain and learning.

Short-Term to Long-Term Memory

Short-term memory only lasts a few minutes. If you want to lock down
information that is important, you must shift it to long-term memory.
In a nutshell, this means recalling the information in timed intervals.

For instance, you are in a college government class. The professor is
lecturing on important Supreme Court cases. The professor lectures
about the importance of each case in terms of American history. You are
pretty sure some of these cases if not all of them will end up on your
next test.

So how do you lock these important cases into your long-term memory?
You do it by reviewing these cases at timed intervals. After class, as
soon as possible. Review this material again. Try to recall each case,
its importance, and any important facts or details. If you don't have a
class, go to the library or some quite place and simply see what you
can recall. What you can't go back over your notes. It's that simple.

The next day at around the same time or close to it, break out your
notes again. See what you can recall. Hopefully, you will recall a
little more than you did yesterday. Then a week later, review the
material again. You should be able to recall even more.

A week before the test, review the material again. The night before the
test your review should be easy, as the material should be locked into
long term memory. Work your short-term to long-term plan to best
facilitate the brain and learning.

Pictures are Better Than Symbols

No doubt about it. The brain remembers pictures better than symbols
like letters of the alphabet. How can you take advantage of this?
Associate what you have to learn with visuals or pictures.

For instance, if you have a grocery list of five items exaggerate the
items and give them some action. Your list is to buy bananas, chocolate
ice cream, olives, hamburger buns, and carrots. The trick is to create
pictures in the wildest possible way.

Imagine you ride to the store in a giant banana split car loaded with
bananas and chocolate ice cream. As you enter the store, you notice the
cashier's head is a hamburger bun with olives for eyes, and a carrot
for a nose. Visualize this a few times and you won't forget it once you
get to the store.

What if the list is more abstract? Use the peg system. It is a tried
and true system associates pictures with information you need to learn.

be able to remember a hundred or more items with relative ease and lock
down the brain and learning using pictures.

Use Multiple Intelligences to Customize Your Brain for Lifetime Success

Discovery of the Multiple Intelligences

Knowing the multiple intelligences can help you customize your brain.
It can help you choose the right profession or hobby. Find out which of
the multiple intelligences you are good at.

It wasn't that long ago that intelligence was measured by a number. You
were assigned a number. You were smart or not according to high your
number, your IQ.

Fortunately today, we know that intelligence is more complex than a
simple number. The old measurement of intelligence level was derived
from a test based on two types of intelligence: mathematical and
linguistic.

But in the 1980s, Howard Gardner of Harvard isolated seven types of
intelligences. Since then he has identified at least one more and
possibly three types. Today, we will focus on his original seven of the
multiple intelligences.

The Seven of the Multiple Intelligences:

1. Mathematical/Logical

This intelligence enables the brain to understand mathematics and
logical operations. Mathematicians, engineers, scientists,
statisticians, and logicians have a strong mathematical/logical
intelligence. You don't have to be a math genius in this field. Some,
like accountants and attorneys, may not be calculus whizzes. But they
are good at logic and analyzing. In a general way, logic has more to do
with statements and mathematics has more to do with numbers. Note that
this intelligence has to do with operations. Thus, when a young student
adds 1 + 1 to get 2, she is using an operation.

2. Linguistic

People who have sensitivity to written and spoken language utilize this
intelligence. Writers, translators, public speakers, and poets have
strong linguistic intelligence. Like mathematical/logical intelligence,
linguistic intelligence covers several areas. Thus, a writer may not be
proficient in learning new languages. A translator may not be a good
writer. Attorneys exhibit this intelligence when they write and speak
in court.

The above two intelligences are the basis of most traditional IQ and
college entrance tests. Students high in these two intelligences ace
college entrance tests.

The Artistic Multiple Intelligences

3. Musical

This intelligence covers the rhythms and patterns of sounds. A flair
for musical composition and performance marks these individuals.
Musicians and singers employ musical intelligence.

4. Bodily/kinesthetic

Using the body, especially in rhythmic or athletic ways defines this
intelligence type. Dancers, acrobats, gymnasts, athletes are
kinesthetics. Anyone who loves to move may be a kinesthetic. Others
include seamstresses and truck drivers.

5. Spatial

People who recognize patterns in space have spatial intelligence. They
understand proportion and perspective. They have sensitivity to color.
Artists, sculptors, chess players, architects use this intelligence.
Note that pilots have kinesthetic as well as spatial intelligence.
Surgeons, interior decorators, and graphic artists all have a good
sense of the spatial. Note that surgeons also need kinesthetic
intelligence.

The People Multiple Intelligences:

6. Interpersonal

People with this intelligence relate well to other people. They can be
good leaders. They have a feel for what makes others tick. Teachers,
salesman, counselors, customer service representatives, and negotiators
have interpersonal intelligence.

7. Intrapersonal

"Know thyself" was an ancient Greek dictum. These individuals know
themselves. They know their motivations, their strengths and
weaknesses. They know how to regulate their lives. Anyone who wrestles
with human motivation or affairs of the heart exercises this
intelligence. Some examples are novelists, dramatists, and
psychologists.

Many occupations combine multiple intelligences. Thus an aeronautical
engineer uses both spatial and mathematical intelligence. A good
businessman may use mathematical/logical intelligence to analyze data.
He may use interpersonal intelligence to motivate his employees. A
singer who writes his own songs uses musical as well as linguistic
intelligences.

Know which of the multiple intelligences you are good. Then you can
pinpoint the type of profession you should pursue. Many professions
need several of the multiple intelligences to achieve success.

Can you achieve higher intelligence or IQ? Can you get more brain
power?

The past decade has seen an explosion of brain knowledge. Many of the
old myths about the brain that have existed for hundreds of years have
been proven false, even though the average person as well as many
doctors and scientists hold these false views about the brain and brain
power.

In the old paradigm there was not much you could do about intelligence
or IQ once you reached adulthood. You were stuck with the brain and
intelligence you had. Further, it was thought that as you grew older,
you lost brain cells until your brain lost its ability to function at
peak levels. So as you grew older you lost brain power.

Brain Plasticity Fuels Brain Power

Thanks to two advances in neurology in the forms of scanning
technology, positron-emission tomography (PET) and functional magnetic
resonance imaging (fMRI), our concepts and knowledge about the brain is
changing radically.

We now know that the brain works in a similar way to a muscle. If you
lift weights oxygen and nutrients are pumped into the muscle and it
grows. Similarly when you think, the circuits within that area like
math or language become active and additional glucose and oxygen is
sent. Blood flow increases. Brain density in this area increases. Scan
technology records these changes. You can ramp up brain power.

Further, scan technology has proven that the brain gets smarter the
more we use it. Like the weight lifter who gets stronger because he
works his muscles, the brain gets smarter when you work your thinking
muscles.

So the big question is: Can you get smarter? Can you program your brain
to get smarter in certain areas? Can you build the brain for brain
power? And the answer is YES.

What Brain Scans Reveal about Brain Plasticity

The bottom line is that the brain has "plasticity" A neurologist can
scan a person's brain and see a difference between a dancer and a
pianist. Different parts of the brain show higher density in their area
of performance. The pianist will show increased development in the area
of the brain controlling finger movement. A taxi driver will have a
larger hippocampus, the area of the brain managing "spatial
visualization and navigation."

Going back to athletics, what sport an athlete enters bears greatly on
what muscles he or she develops and what kinds of movements the athlete
masters. A football player ends up not only with a different skill set
than a tennis player but a different body.

So what profession you go into, can dramatically affect your brain.
Your brain will grow more dense (brain density is good) in areas where
you do most of your thinking thanks to brain plasticity.

Your Brain is Flexible

Once scientists thought your brain was hard-wired. They further thought
that intelligence was set. Once you reached adulthood you were stuck
with what you had. In fact, neurologists have been amazed at the
"plasticity" of your brain.

The most recent findings about the brain come from brain scans. The
brain grows cells in the areas you think most about. Or to put it more
accurately, the cells that are being produced in your brain specialize
to whatever you put your thinking into. Today, we know that significant
brain development is a real possibility.

Say you love the guitar and practice for hours and hours for many days.
The cells in that part of your brain having to do with moving your
fingers in intricate patterns will grow and specialize to that ability.
You will have more cells and they will be specialized beyond what the
average person would have. This has been proven with brain scans.

This is true for all areas. Spend thousands of hours playing chess and
leaning about chess and you will have more cells that specialize in
spatial functionality.

Your Brain Has Multiple Intelligences

The view that existed until the 1980s was that the brain was
two-dimensional. It operated mainly with verbal-linguistic and
logical-mathematical intelligence. Education emphasized these two types
of intelligence.

All this changed when Howard Gardner, a Harvard professor, published
his findings in 1985 in his book Frames of Mind: The Theory of Multiple
Intelligences.

Gardner found seven types of intelligences. The five other types were
visual-spatial, kinesthetic, interpersonal, intrapersonal, and musical.
Later, two other types were added: naturalistic and existential.

Gardner's theory makes sense. Why is it that a person who is a poor
student in school later becomes a star salesman? It is because they
have good interpersonal intelligence. They relate to people.

Other students who fared poorly in school became successful artists,
graphic designers, web designers, and mechanics. They excelled at
spatial intelligence.

Some professions require a combination of two types of intelligence. A
surgeon needs logical-mathematical ability but also kinesthetic
intelligence. Thus a surgeon needs deftness of hand and sensitivity of
touch to perform successful operations.

Individuals who can relate to higher meaning and spirituality and
communicate these to others exhibit intrapersonal intelligence. A
minister would have this type of intelligence.

So it's not just a case of brain development. It's which intelligence
do you want to develop.

Your Brain Grows with Exercise

Like a muscle the brain grows with exercise. It doesn't get bigger. It
gets smarter. When you exercise your brain by thinking or learning, you
create new connections in the wiring of the brain. Special cells called
dendrites become denser. Your intelligence is not set. It can and does
change as you work it.

The brain creates new cells all the time. As a cell is created, it
immediately looks for a job to do. If you exercise your musical
intelligence by playing the piano, the new cell may be used. It is now
a specialized cell aiding in your musical intelligence. If the new cell
finds nothing to do, it will simply die.

Sex is Good for Your Brain

It produces important healthy chemicals and hormones. Some of these
include testosterone, estrogen, chemical nitric oxide, pheromones,
epinephrine, norepinephrine, dopamine, serotonin, endorphins, and
phenylethylamine.

Sex helps produce these chemicals in the right amount for the health of
your brain and body.

When it comes to sex, it is the brain where orgasm happens. Having a
healthy brain and a positive orientation about life keeps them great.

Your Brain Programs Itself

Think of the brain as like a computer operating system. During your
life you choose to install certain software programs into your brain.
You put the account profession software into your brain, or you put the
football coaching software into your brain, or you put the musician's
software into your brain.

It is what we choose to put into our brains that determines a large
part of our lives. When you receive further education in your field,
you are rewriting your software. Think of pursuing a higher degree as a
newer version. The Ph.D. might be version 3. As you work and get
experience that could be version 4. Of course, it is not exactly that
crude and as you work on a day to day basis you are revising a little
bit at a time.

The real test comes not in how much knowledge we have, but how deep our
thinking is in these areas. A Ph.D. might have tremendous knowledge
about a subject but can he or she truly think about their knowledge? Do
they truly have control of their subject matter? Can they see the
subject matter and add new concepts to their field. In other words, can
the user actually write the program or does the user install someone
else's program. It makes all the difference in the world.

Your brain development will advance significantly if you keep these 5
key concepts in mind while developing your brain.
